Reasons to Make Homemade Seasoning Blends

There’s something incredibly satisfying about making your own seasoning mixes. Not only do you get to choose exactly what goes in them (and what to skip — ahem, looking at you, anti-caking agent and other junk), but they also tend to taste a lot better, making them save you money. Let’s get into some of the specifics:

  • Full control over the ingredients: Store-bought seasonings often contain hidden sugars, artificial additives, or the wrong kind of salt in the wrong amount. All of our homemade recipes feature herbs spices, and… that’s it! You can also tweak the ingredients to suit your dietary needs or preferences. For example, if you’re watching your sodium intake, you can cut back or skip the salt altogether.
  • Cost-effective: There’s no denying that homemade blends are more affordable than pre-packaged ones — especially if you buy in bulk or grow your own herbs. Reusing jars and other containers instead of buying new also makes it an eco-friendly option.
  • Fresher and more flavorful: Homemade blends can be made with organic or homegrown ingredients! Plus, if you use homegrown, you know exactly how long each herb or spice has been sitting in your pantry, so you don’t run the risk of using stale or old ingredients. This also gives a much better flavor. Seasonal herbs, either from your garden or the market, make all the difference.

In addition to all of this, learning how to make our homemade mixes and blends is plain ole fun. You can experiment with different herb and spice combinations and even get your kiddos involved in the process! We also love giving these as gifts. They make for a really wonderful (and unique) housewarming present or even make them ahead for Christmas gifts.

Easy Homemade Seasoning Mixes for Spring

Spring calls for fresh and bright flavors after a winter full of soups, stews, and other heavier meals. These homemade seasoning blends provide all of that and more! Each one is simple to make and perfect for the season’s lighter dishes.

Herbs de Provence

Inspired by French cooking, herbs de Provence is a versatile blend made with dried thyme, rosemary, oregano, basil, marjoram, and lavender. It’s often used on roasted chicken, fish, or vegetable dishes like the famous ratatouille and our favorite green beans.

  • 2 parts Thyme
  • 2 parts Rosemary
  • 2 parts Oregano
  • 1 part Basil
  • 1 part Marjoram
  • 1 part Lavender

To use, simply combine the herbs above and then sprinkle over meat or fish, or stir into vegetables or sauces. It works super well in so many different recipes!

Homemade Poultry Seasoning

This homemade poultry seasoning will instantly enhance the flavor of chicken or turkey. Our blend features dried sage, thyme, rosemary, marjoram, black pepper, nutmeg, onion powder, and a healthy dose of garlic powder.

  • 2 parts Sage
  • 2 parts Thyme
  • 1 part Rosemary
  • 1 part Marjoram
  • 1 part Black Pepper
  • 1/2 part Nutmeg
  • 1/2 part Garlic Powder

Once blended, sprinkle or rub the mixture over your poultry of choice before cooking it. We also like it on roasted veggies!

Lemon Pepper Spice Blend

Bright and citrusy, lemon and pepper pair so well together for spring. Our easy recipe combines lemon zest, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, sea salt, and dried thyme that can be used on roasted poultry, grilled vegetables, seafood, or even on salads.

  • 3 parts Black Pepper

Citrus Mint Blend

There isn’t much that’s more refreshing than citrus and mint! This has got to be the most unique and easy homemade seasoning mixes for spring. It works so well on lighter fare like chicken, lamb and grilled veggies.

Made with lemon zest, orange zest, dried mint leaves, basil, rosemary, and a touch of sea salt, add it to poultry, fish, or vegetables before grilling or roasting.

  • 2 parts Lemon Zest
  • 2 parts Orange Zest
  • 1 part Dried Mint Leaves
  • 1 part Basil
  • 1/2 part Rosemary
  • 1/2 part Sea Salt

Spring Vegetable Spice Blend

Spring veggies like asparagus, peas, and kale are great on their own, but sometimes we need a little something extra — and a homemade spice blend will highlight their natural flavor, so they shine even more! This mix includes dried parsley, thyme, chives, dill, garlic powder, onion powder, lemon zest, and sea salt.

Use to sprinkle it over roasted or steamed vegetables, or add it to Greek yogurt to create a unique and fresh dip for crudité (a.k.a. Veggie tray with dip).

  • 3 parts Dried Parsley
  • 2 parts Thyme
  • 1 part Chives
  • 1 part Dill
  • 1 part Lemon Zest
  • 1/2 part Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 part Onion Powder
  • 1/2 part Sea Salt

Ranch Mix

Everyone loves ranch, and making your own is actually a lot easier than you may think! Our classic blend features dried parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, dried dill, dried chives, salt, and black pepper. You even get to skip the corn syrup with this homemade mix!

  • 3 parts Dried Parsley
  • 2 parts Dried Dill
  • 1 part Garlic Powder
  • 1 part Onion Powder
  • 1/2 part Dried Chives
  • 1/2 part Black Pepper
  • 1/2 part Salt
  • 1 cup Powdered Milk (Optional)

Use it to make homemade ranch dressing, season roasted potatoes or even add a tangy kick to a bowl of popcorn. You’ll never reach for store-bought again. We love adding it to sour cream for a chip and veggie dip!
