DIY Home Decor for Every Season
Sep 16, 2025
There was a time when there was no Hobby Lobby. I know… isn’t that horrible? But it’s true, no craft stores with pre-made decorations for every season. It wasn’t really that long ago, but I can still remember when the craft stores only had materials to make your own decorations. Yes, I’m that old.
I would spend hours crafting in my room each and every season, changing up what hung from my ceilings, what was on the walls, and what sat on the shelves. Now, as a grown woman and mother to four, that hasn’t changed much. The only difference is that I have more than one room now, and I don’t hang much from the ceiling unless it’s Christmas lights!
When I started gardening, though, I learned that I could grow my own decorations, which took all of those handmade items up a notch. Not only does growing your own decorations save money, but it also brings in the season naturally. It takes a little bit of planning, but I promise it is a labor of love that will be worth it in the end!
We’ve rounded up our favorite DIY home decor ideas for all four seasons, from floral bouquets to wall art to festive garlands and more. Whether you are preparing DIY holiday decorations for a party or simply to soak up the beauty of your favorite season, these homegrown decor ideas are sure to bring beautiful moments and memories to your home in every season of life.

Reasons to Make Your Own DIY Home Decor
One of our favorite reasons to make DIY decor is the fact that it is just so rewarding to see the different pieces go from seed to harvest and be turned into something unique and beautiful.
On top of looking fabulous and festive, decorations are so fun to make! Getting crafty is a great way to express yourself, and it can also be a fun family activity that the kids can be part of too.
Making your own decorations is also an affordable way to celebrate the seasons. After all, store-bought decorations can get pretty pricey, and they’re often made with a lot of plastic and junk that is no good for the God's green earth. When you create your own decor, you not only save money but also do your part in keeping junk out of the landfill.
Most importantly, DIY decor made from our own gardens allows us to use what God has given us and turn it into something beautiful. Every time you look around your home, the decorations will remind you of His abundance and blessings. Along with the memories and stories that came with making them.
Types of DIY Room Decor
The best part about DIY home decor is that there are unlimited possibilities for what you can make. If you’re not quite sure where to start, here are some popular DIY project ideas that we recommend you try:
- Wall art: Try hanging up framed pressed flowers, or make your own shadow boxes with dried plants.
- Holiday wreaths: Wreaths are eye-catching and welcoming during any season. You can place them on your doors, above the fireplace mantel, or on the wall.
- Window decorations: Hanging homemade garlands or dried herbs by the windows will add dimension and beauty to the room.
- Table decorations: Centerpieces and seasonal accents will give your kitchen table a festive touch.
- Flower bouquets: Fresh flowers are sure to add a splash of beautiful color to any space they are in. You can make your arrangements based on in-season colors and blooms!
- Food and drinks: Our list would be incomplete without decorations you can eat and drink! DIY charcuterie boards can double as a centerpiece and appetizer, and festive beverages can also be a show-stopper for any special occasion. The Farmer will tell you how much I have always loved 'playing with' and photographing my food!
Our Favorite Seasonal Farmhouse DIY Home Decor
Every season has its own unique qualities: different colors, in-season items, and holidays to keep in mind. Let’s dive into some of our favorite ways to decorate the farmhouse during each season. By the time you reach the end of this round-up list, you’ll have a whole year's worth of seasonal decor ideas under your belt!
Spring
Spring is the season of beautiful blooms. For this time of year, we want our DIY home decor to focus on florals and all the wonderful ways we can use them. Of course, we are going to have flower bouquets. Some of the best flowers for spring bouquets include tulips, peonies, daffodils, lilacs, and sweet peas.
In addition to bouquets, you can have flower planters at your window — whether it’s a windowsill box or hanging planters!
Dried and pressed flowers are another way to enjoy the vibrant colors of springtime flowers. You can hang framed pressed flower art on your walls or make your own coasters with dried flowers to keep on top of your table.
While spring decor often features lots of bright and festive colors, we can also think about DIY holiday decorations that incorporate the softer pastel colors associated with Easter.
Summer
During the summer season, we are keeping our decorations bright and cheery! Our favorite flowers for summer bouquets are sunflowers, lavender, zinnias, dahlias, and cosmos.
Summer is a great time to use fresh edible flowers. Whenever we have company in the summer months, we love serving fresh salads topped with edible flowers as an eye-catching garnish. Edible flowers are also a beautiful touch for our favorite iced beverages, from a simple garnish to the cutest floral ice cubes. There’s nothing better than a refreshing beverage to beat the summer heat, and edible flowers will certainly take your treats to the next level.
Fall
While I love all of the seasons, fall is my absolute favorite time of year for decorating (and everything else). Fall is harvest season, which means abundance, and that includes decorating with natural home grown decorations!
Corn stalks, hay bales, and dried wheat heads will all make great additions to your fall decor. Dried apples are another item that can be used to make a stunning garland or centerpiece. And we can’t forget about pumpkins, of course! We love growing and harvesting our own decorative pumpkins and using them all throughout the farmhouse, from the kitchen table to the fireplace mantle and more.
We also love using fall flowers to create a cozy, welcoming space. Our top picks of flowers for fall bouquets include chrysanthemums, marigolds, zinnias, and my personal favorite: calendula flowers.
Winter
The shorter, colder days of the winter season mean that we are growing fewer crops during this time of year. Instead, we shift our focus to foraging, collecting all the gifts we can find in nature. Foraging for winter decor allows us to get creative with items like pinecones, cedar trees, mistletoe, and red berry plants.
A festive holiday wreath is one of the most essential DIY holiday decorations for Christmas. To make the perfect wreath, grab your red and green foragables, along with some floral wire, hot glue, and scissors. You will also need a base for your wreath, made from a material such as wire, straw, or foam.
One of our other favorite DIY home decor items to prepare for the Christmas season is dried orange slices. We love to string them together in garlands, tuck them into wreaths, or pair them with herb sprigs to decorate packages and gifts.
If you’re not sure how to dry oranges, the steps are actually quite simple! You can use a few different methods depending on your preference, whether that be air drying, using the oven, or using a dehydrator. Preserved orange slices are popular not only because of their beautiful appearance, but also because of their delightful citrusy scent.
Most Common DIY Home Decor Questions
What tools do I need to make DIY room decor?
Some of the most helpful tools for DIY projects include a hot glue gun, scissors, a ruler, measuring tape, and twine or other string. If you are harvesting items from your garden to use as decoration, make sure you have garden shears for easy cutting.
How far in advance should I decorate for each season?
Here on the farm, we love to get our decorations at just the right time! We like to bring in the decor when the seasons change and the mood is right. But, you may want to start making your DIY decorations a few weeks before you plan to put them up so that you are ready to go at the turn of the season.
How do I store my seasonal decorations?
Certain types of preserved decor items can be saved and used again if stored properly. This includes pressed flower frames and shadow boxes, or other durable items like pinecones and wood. Keep in mind that not all seasonal items will keep well. Perishable decorations, like fresh centerpiece items or flowers, will need to be tossed. However, you can have fun making new arrangements every year!
Seasonal Decorations Right from the Garden
Every season makes me incredibly excited to see what abundance God will send my way. Sometimes there is not much to use but necessity is the mother of invention as they say. This forces us to think outside the box and use what we have. It brings out the human side of us, and more creativity with decor inspires originality.
DIY room decor allows us to make the most of the natural gifts with what God provides during each season. Homemade seasonal decor is not only so fun to make, but also a beautiful way to enjoy each season and the harvest that comes with it. We hope that whatever decorations you choose to make will be a blessing to you, your family, and your home!
